Share your iPhone or iPad safely with Apple iOS Guided Access

Audience: Parents of younger kids.

Requirements: Apple iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with iOS 6 or later.

Caution: Apple iOS Guided Access requires a passcode. This passcode is separate from you main device passcode. You must remember this passcode or you may be unable to exit from Guided Access.

If you let your child use your iPhone or iPad from time to time, this article is for you.

While you can install an app that’s appropriate for your child, how can you stop them from leaving that app and accidentally accessing other information that you don’t intend?

Apple iOS Guided Access to the rescue! Here’s how it works:

If you haven’t used Guided Access before, you’ll need to enable it in your device settings.

  • Open your device settings and go to “General”, then “Accessibility”.
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the list and press “Guided Access”.
  • Slide the button to “On”.
  • Enter a passcode when prompted. You MUST REMEMBER this passcode.
  • If your device has TouchID, you can also turn this on to end Guided Access.

You’re ready to go! Now, to turn on Guided Access whenever you need it:

  • Open the app you want to let your child use.
  • Press the Home button three times.
  • Thats it! Guided Access has started. Only that app can be used.

To end Guided Access:

  • Press the Home button three times. Or, if you enabled TouchID for Guided Access, press once, then use TouchID.
  • Enter your Guided Access passcode.
  • Press “End” at the top left of the screen.

Advanced Guided Access Settings:

You can also control individual options within Guided Access. Instead of pressing “End”, press “Options” on the bottom left of your screen. Here you can control access to the Sleep/Wake button, Volume button, Motion (screen rotation), Keyboards, Touch and you can set a time limit for Guided Access.

You can also select areas of the screen within an app that you want to disable. For example, advertisement bars on some free apps, address bar in Safari, Settings or Options menus, etc.
